Course content
To turn a cream base into a therapeutic herbal cream, one needs to add appropriate herbal extracts in sufficient amount. A successful cream base accommodates additional herbal extracts while maintaining thermodynamic and microbiological stability of the final product. Furthermore, next to stability, the formulation of a cream base plays an important role in the therapeutic success of the final herbal cream. This course will guide you through the process of manufacturing stable cream bases that allow for addition of herbal extracts ex tempore. Emphasis is placed on a fit-for-purpose formulation of cream bases that yield final herbal creams tailored to specific skin needs. The class is complemented by a practical spreadsheet calculator.
You will:
- Develop detailed understanding of basic cosmetic chemistry principles to formulate stable emulsions.
- Gain the capacity to choose from various emulsifying waxes and preservatives.
- Understand how to activate cream bases, i.e. which cream bases are suitable for addition of different types of herbal extracts and how much extracts can be added.
- Master the manufacturing process of cream bases.
